What Is PU Paint?

PU paint (polyurethane paint) is a high-performance protective coating made from polyurethane resin. It forms a tough, flexible, chemical-resistant film that protects metal, concrete, wood and steel from corrosion, abrasion, chemicals and weather - while delivering a durable, high-gloss finish.

The Chemistry Behind Polyurethane Coatings

PU paint cures through a reaction between a polyol resin and an isocyanate hardener. This chemical bond creates a dense, cross-linked film the reason PU is so hard-wearing yet flexible.

One-Component vs Two-Component PU Paint

1K (one-component): ready to use, cures with moisture in the air. Simpler to apply, moderate performance.

2K (two-component): resin + hardener mixed before use. Far tougher, higher chemical and abrasion resistance. This is the standard for serious industrial work.

How PU Paint Works

Film Formation & Curing
Once the two components are mixed, curing begins. The coating flows, levels, then hardens into a continuous protective film bonded to the surface. Correct film thickness and full cure are what deliver the performance.

Application Process

Surface Preparation

Clean off rust, oil, dust and old loose paint

Abrade or blast to create a key

Apply the correct primer (epoxy or zinc-rich for steel)

Ensure the surface is dry and dust-free

Mixing & Application

Mix resin and hardener in the specified ratio

Respect the pot life - mix only what you can apply

Apply by spray, brush or roller to the correct film thickness

Maintain suitable temperature and humidity

Curing & Handling

Allow full cure before heavy use

Follow recoat windows exactly

Keep the fresh film free from water and dust

How to Select the Right PU Paint (Buying Guide)

Indoor or Outdoor?	Outdoor applications require Aliphatic PU Paint for superior UV resistance.
Surface	Metal, Concrete or Wood choose the appropriate coating system.
Exposure	Chemicals, Heat, UV or Abrasion select the coating accordingly.
Finish	Gloss, Semi-Gloss or Matt.
1K or 2K?	For industrial applications, 2K PU Paint is recommended.
